Discover Hermann's Old-World Charm
Tucked away in the Missouri River Valley about an hour west of St. Louis, Hermann, Missouri, is a picturebook village where lock towers and church steeples rise above sturdy 19th-century red-brick buildings.

The town was founded in 1836 by German immigrants who dreamed of a New World utopia that would be “German in every particular.” It’s said that their scouts selected the location because it reminded them of their beloved Rhine Valley.

Finding the steep terrain unsuitable for farming, the German settlers covered the hillsides with vineyards, built cavernous underground cellars and began making wine. In its glory days Hermann was home to the second largest winery in the country and produced more than one million gallons of wine a year.
Today Hermann is still known for its award-winning wineries, German heritage, and quiet Old-World charm.
